Debbie McDonald & Brentina
Debbie and Brentina spent a couple of months training at Klaus's farm. Debbie: "Klaus is one of the few true horsemen that I would consider training with. He always does what is best for the horse. And he loves Brentina."
Klaus insists on frequent rest periods for the horse during the training session. Let the horse stretch down and relax the muscles that have been worked. A muscle can only become stronger when it is contracted and then relaxed. A muscle under constant stress actually gets smaller because of the constant stress. As Klaus rode up to Debbie, he was so pleased with Brentina's performance that he said "I don't have a sugar cube for her" knowing full well that Debbie did. Brentina earned her sugar cube. Brentina does "Sugar Stretches" Gay Walker Reports - Day One The Grand Prix horse should be able to go in a snaffle. A correctly trained Grand Prix horse should go very nicely on a plain snaffle. Debbie demonstrates this nicely. Half halts should be playful and not pulling. In the canter, the horse should be "surrounded" with the legs to get more jump. In collection, think of playfully bringing the horse back. If the hand is playful, there should not be much need for the driving aids and the horse should remain light and jumping in the canter pirouette. The last change in a series of tempis should be as energetic as the first. Mistakes in the tempis are usually the rider’s error and stem from a lack of concentration. The rider’s focus determines the horse’s focus. Rider inattention leads to mistakes. The rider cannot relax his/her concentration when the flying changes start out well. If the rider becomes insecure, the horse becomes tight which makes the rider tighter and causes errors and loss of impulsion. The rider may need to use the whip as a positive support when schooling so that the rider is able to sit quietly and in a relaxed fashion while still keeping the horse forward. |
