Sydney 2000

Home

Sunday, October 1.  Sydney and the Australians have been so friendly that it is almost with regret that it's time to go home.  Flight from Sydney to Los Angeles takes about 14 1/2 hours, then connections to Denver and Tulsa make it over 24 hours from the time I leave my lovely apartment in the Blue Mountains.  Driving time to the airport is estimated at 2 hours -- mostly "interstate" (autobahn).

The logistics have been that on the Grand Prix and Special days there were 25 rides.  Wake up time is 5:30 a.m., drive to the train station, then take an hour + train to Blacktown where shuttle buses to the Horse Park are waiting.  About a 30 minute bus ride, rapid entry through the metal dectectors.  A quick stop in the International Spectators Pavilion --- extremely welcome on Tuesday when it poured down rain during lunch.  Then about 10 min walk back to the seats through the crowd.

I would get back to the apartment about 7:30 p.m., pack up the laptop and setup in the lodge office.  Reports filed, emails read and back to bed about 11 p.m.

Photos will be online as soon as we get back home.  EJ Chin did make the trip missing only the first day of the Grand Prix because entry visa hadn't been applied. EJ has photos of every competitor and sat next to Ferro's co-owner.  He was hoping for a back stage visit to the barn and I'm sure he will report in detail as always as soon as he gets online.

The locals always asked:  What do you think of Sydney's Olympics?  As always Olympics require major construction, even details as putting up extra airport signs, and planning access for traffic and parking.  Sydney did a superb job!

We all want to come back for a visit.
