The Tribute Arena

World Equestrian
Games - Rome 1998

When setting out to find the right sand, Duckek searched for two weeks in the environs of Rome. When he didn’t find what he was looking for he "started to get nervous."

Duckek started out in life as a farmer, who spent all of his time in the saddle. His family said to him to either find a way to make a living with horses or leave the farm. So, for the next 30 or so years he trained horses and riders in Dressage, most notably the Swedish and Danish dressage teams.

When you heard the roar of his tractor, you knew to get out of the way, as Hermann would use every moment of the brief intermissions between classes to tend to his arena.

In a failed attempt to interview Hermann, I found instead, perhaps the next Hermann Ducket, Nicolas, at the wheel of Hermann's tractor.

Herman Duckek is most recently known as the arena footing guru but many don't know that he was first a successful rider and trainer.  Duckek started out in life as a farmer, who spent all of his time in the saddle. His family said to him to either find a way to make a living with horses or leave the farm. So, for the next 30 or so years he trained horses and riders in Dressage, most notably the Swedish and Danish dressage teams. He worked with Flyinge Bobby, a Swedish team competitor at these Games for several years prior to the 1996 Olympic Games. For 18 years, Duckek also served as president of the International Dressage Trainers Club.
